“I had no idea how important this pencil would become to me.”
This is my Universal Mechanical pencil (circa 1970). This pencil over the last 50 years has been on my desk, in my hand everyday. I believe I can't work, sketch or think without it. It is my partner, my constant. Strange, I know. After graduating high school one evening, my good friend’s brother David handed me this odd looking pencil. Man of few words, he said, “You might need this.”
“What is it?” I asked.
I had never seen a mechanical pencil before, and it was beautiful - aluminum with black enamel and a green top, made in Italy. Holding it in my hand, I said, “Thank you, I’ll take good care of it.” I had no idea that it would take such good care of me. It was magic! I’ve had panic attacks when it has been mislaid. It still works beautifully! I consider it my partner, now worn, but still loved. I often wonder if my generous friend knows how important this pencil has become to me.
