“Discussing Dinner”
“Patiently Waiting”
“Dinner Delivery”
In Onancock I lived for 20 years on a creek that fed into the Chesapeake Bay. There was an eagle who made daily drone-like flights over my property inspecting her fiefdom. In all my life I’d never been close enough to see such detail nor hear the sounds as she flew close to the ground, to view the shadows she cast as she flew over to shoo the crane so she could steal it's fish. The nest in the sycamore tree was built with care alongside her partner who seemed to hang on her every word orchestrating the building of an architectural achievement.
These paintings are rendered in gouache and watercolor on 300 lb Fabriano cotton paper. I like the effect of using the two different paints, both uniquely challenging. The gouache I use is highly pigmented and the colors alive; the watercolor is more ethereal. I use a glazing technique that requires a short drying time between additional layers, many layers of thin glazes to achieve the color I want. These paintings are actually three paintings in one; the nest, of course, front and center, the structure of the massive sycamore branches, and the eagles, who seem to be saying, “The less you know about us the better we like it.”
Thank you for visiting my quiet world of art.
